Cash-back Fraud - 'Janet Clark:

Initial message:
"Hope this message finds you well. I saw these creatives works on your web site and i will like you to get back with more details if they are still available for purchase.
I will appreciate an urgent reply."
… the correspondence became more and more bizarre, ending after her husband sent a check for $4500, more than twice the price of the work she wanted to buy. She asked that I deposit the check and give the overpayment to her moving company which was responsible for picking up the work. When I refused and said I was returning the check, I did not hear from them again. Besides this last absurd issue and the odd grammar and vocabulary, another tip-off was that she would not tell me how she found my work.
This is a classic example of a cash-back fraud.
The check would have turned out to be fraudulent and the artist would be out of pocket for the 'shipping'.

Dear artist
I am an avid collector of African American art. I have never considered photography as I try to stick with one medium. Yet while streaming the web for art in my area, I stumbled into your website.
The photo "Jess" is just incredible!!! I would like to own one, but the price of $1100. is steep for me - not that your talent doesn't command it.
Nevertheless, is there some chance I can go through you to obtain this "piece" rather than the gallery and do better?
Hopefully,
M. Weuker

fair enough the rest are scams but that "Marc Weuker" could have been for real? what made you think he wasn't, based on that one email?

I received two of the "Veronica Smith" emails above. This morning, I received another one worded a bit differently than the other two. I'm pasting it below to help get the word out about the new one circulating now.
Thank you for posting these scams -- it's good to have peace of mind that it is a scam and not an honest customer.

Kindly let me know your comments on these, before i send theitems i am interested in purchasing from you.

I was sucked in,, just few days ago, I ve western union-ed 3,000 USD back.. same method.. damn,, when she first contacted me, i googled her name and was not listed anywhere.. if it only had been a few weekes later, I would not have lost this large money.. be aware,, everyone, I ve exchanged over 30 emails with her, easily over few weeks and she almost bacame a friend....

forgot to state who it was, its Gilly Thobela..
Posted by: Tomokazu Matsuyama | October 23, 2010 at 12:44 AM
Wow, so they also try to scam artist? Thanks for posting, everybody!
Posted by: artsy ants | October 26, 2010 at 04:12 AM
Assuming, now that the they ve seen this, they will change their names,, since Gilly Thoebela mistakenly send me an email with a different name of Betty as well,, When you sell work and get a check that states higher qoute than what you expect, do NOT cash them, when they ask you to wire money back through Western Union, do NOT wire them. this is most likely a SCAM..
