ARTISTS WITHOUT STUDIOS PRIZE
DEADLINE: 7th JULY 2009
Ben Uri is delighted to announce a new competition for young artists, providing them with a residency and a public exhibition of the resulting work. This summer, the gallery will divide its exhibition space into a number of discrete artists’ ‘studios’, allowing up to four young artists the time and space to work on a project. Ben Uri will be open to the public from 2-5.30pm during this time and so the artists can work uninterrupted in the mornings and will be encouraged to engage with visitors and explain their practice during their work in the afternoons. The studios will in situ for about three weeks. They will then be cleared away in order to present a group show, curated by Katy Barron, at the end of the period. This will last for a week and will present the work made at the gallery to the public. It will be a selling show to which the artists are able to invite guests and it is also anticipated that there will be an evening talk to the Artists Peer Group given by the artists at which they will discuss their experience at Ben Uri and the work that they created.
Ben Uri aims to support artists at every stage in their careers. It is widely acknowledged how difficult it can be to afford studios, especially at the outset of an artist’s career, and it is hoped that this residency and exhibition will afford a few practitioners the opportunity to make work in a sympathetic and supportive environment and to further their practice.
