ARchiTecture Residency: DESIGN-BUILD-AND-LIVE IN PROJECT, Ghana

ARchiTecture Residency: DESIGN-BUILD-AND-LIVE IN PROJECT, Ghana

Target Group: International
Discipline: All the arts (visual, performing, literary and new genres), Architecture, and Engineering
Duration: 3 to 24 months according to project scope and nature of funding.
Organizing Institution: FOTA Foundation, a registered NGO in Ghana (FOTA is an acronym for “focus on the arts”)

DESCRIPTION
This is a project-based residency opportunity for creative persons in earth architecture, earth art/ land art/ earthworks, engineering, and others who can design-and-build dwellings or non-dwellings out of earth and other materials from the environment.

Working individually or in teams, the participant in the ARchiTecture (art+architecture) Residency Project will live in the village next to our 800-acre Artist Village in development at Maabang in the Ashanti Region of Ghana until the participant completes the project on the 800 acreage and can move in. Project is open to traditional and modern construction methods, and experimental approaches that are known to work. Submissions in methods such as adobe, cob, compressed earth, rammed earth, ceramic house, poured/cast earth, papercrete, earthbag, straw-bale, stackwall, earth-shelter, earthship, and other best practices may therefore be in order. Integration of rainwater harvesting, solar and wind energy generation system are indispensable but not obligatory. The lot size and shape are open; you could build it on 120x120 ft plot, an acre, or more. The only criteria that should be met are: (1) Using earth/ other materials from the environment in part or in whole; (2) Creating a durable non-dwelling or a dwelling of at least three-bed rooms ready to move in; and (3) production budget of between €1,000 to €5,000 Euros. Priority may be given to those who have funding or can secure part-funding to complete their conceived project.

For Architecture, in the framework of Fathy (2000), the contemporary participant specialist will be assigned a local master builder and two assistants, or as relative to the proposed process and structure. In sum, we will collaborate with the international participant to procure her/him the per diem and accommodation, and assistance from local specialists and interns in constructing the structures in anticipation that crosscultural interchange and growth in knowledge and skills will be commonplace. International participants will be responsible for sourcing own return air ticket, insurance, and other personal costs. One of our supporting area institutions is the School of Fine
Art, College of Arts and Social Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at Kumasi; so, academic presentations and relevant others are possible.

Individuals or teams wishing to participate in the project should submit formal application to the Artistic Committee; the application should include your work plan, CV/resume, and a sample of completed works or web site to: africoae@gmail.com. The work plan should include at least 3 sketches of the floor plan/ sections/ elevations, budget, and a description of the method/materials, participants, time estimates, etc required to complete your proposed project.

CONCEPTUAL BASIS
The art+architecture project takes in the theoretical frame of the book, Architecture for the Poor: An Experiment in Rural Egypt by a known Egyptian architect, Hassan Fathy. In it, he puts forward that an informed person can, in fact, self-build durable, aesthetic and highly functional buildings without using expensive materials. Along these lines, we are developing a model artist village on some 800 acres in Maabang in the Ahafo Ano North District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana for replication in other parts of Africa. For the locals, it will mean a resolution to the age-old problem for people of artistry- painters, sculptors, actors, dancers, musicians, designers, and others who require low-cost and expanse of space in which to live and work; and for persons in the arts from around the world, it will be a contact point for artist-in-residence for community-based arts projects, cross-cultural conferences and environmental retreats. Thus, we will next add studios, and a multipurpose complex for conferences and community-based arts mission to these residential cottages, as would be road construction to link parts of the village.

We are equally open to some alternative Housing Development Models that work. One example is the condominium program by which International NGOs with similar goals as ours, can design-and-build their structure at own costs and pay development due of €100 per room/per year, as the grounds are owned by FOTA Foundation. If the local artist/ architect group footed all cost, the group would need to pay development due of 50 GH¢ per room/per year, as the grounds belong to our Foundation. However, we are strict that the completed structure be used solely for the purpose proposed.

LOCATION
Maabang is a rural community in the Ahafo-Ano North District in the north-western part of Ashanti Region. The area is located between latitude 6° 47’N and 7 02’N and longitude 2° 26’W and 2° 04’W. The District Hospital at Tepa is the major health facility around the Maabang Traditional Area; there are four smaller health service stations. Like much of Ghana, few of the roads are tarred. The project acreage is along the main road, Tepa-Goaso Road. About 85% of the working population entails farmers in cassava, yam, maize, and plantain but chiefly in cocoa. There, in the town, is a cocoa research center. Timber is one of the many traditional commodities, as the region is mostly of tropical rainforest. Maabang is in the deciduous savannah transition zone. The mean monthly temperature ranges from 26°C (in August) to 30°C (in March). Relative humidity is generally high, ranging between 75-80 percent in the Rainy season and 70-72 percent in the dry season. The mean annual rainfall is between 125 cm and 180cm. Nationwide, there are two main seasons, the raining season and dry season. The raining season is from approximately April to October followed by the dry season, which starts in December with the Hamattan wind blowing from the Saharan Desert and ends in March
each year.

ARRIVAL:
Board flight from a major international airport to Kokota International Airport (ACC), and then to Sunyani Airport; Maabang is 45 minutes drive from Sunyani.

TO APPLY: Candidates should send the following materials to africoae@gmail.com /
(1) Formal Proposal (includes budget and work plan)

Overview
The Artist In Residence Program (AIR)

For periods of 3 or 6 months residents are provided with living accommodation and a studio. During the residency Raid encourages the artist to bring curators, critics and collectors to visit the studio and see the produced work privately.

Raid Projects offers 2 artists a bedroom and adjoining studio each for artists to come to Los Angeles, make new work, network with commercial galleries and curators, and explore Los Angeles. The 2009/10 rate is $1200. The starting dates for the space are; March, June, September, December. Please keep in mind that the summer can be very hot here.

The fee for the entire residency, minus the initial first month's deposit already paid in advance, is due on your arrival date and will not be refunded should you leave or cut short your stay. The future of the residency - dependent as it is on ALL participants and full time residents to cover running costs at no profit margin, thus no fall-back financial structure - will not be jeopardized by those unwilling or unable to fulfill their obligations financially.

The accommodations are for working artists and are not vacation quality. The full time resident artists, including the Director, all financially contribute to the costs of running Raid Projects and all work on behalf of Raid Projects is entirely volunteer based. Please respect this fact and understand that all the artists here do this as a contribution to an international community of artists and are not paid anything. The costs for the AIR are kept low so as many artists can afford to come as possible and all the maintenance and running costs are shared by those here and by the AIR’s fee. This is an artists-run space for the making of art and is not luxurious. Please do not apply if you are looking for anything other than a practical working and living space to make art in.

AIR resident artists are predominantly international, but we also host US artists whose projects are suitable to a LA residency. This will NOT culminate with an exhibition. The residency will entirely concentrate on the artists experimentation and experience of Los Angeles without the pressure of a final outcome. This residency will be for the artist to choose to spend their time wherever they feel it will do them the most good. There is a space dedicated to displaying work for any visits by curators, critics, etc but will not act as a show or host an opening. Please note, upon acceptance into the program, it is up to the artist to secure their space by providing a non-refundable deposit of the first months rent ($1200US). This is the only way to cement the dates you wish to have.

Terms and Conditions

The formal invitation for those selected must be signed and returned to Raid Projects and acts as a legally binding agreement for the AIR – this means that the artist agrees to stay for 3 months (or the 6 month period if accepted to that) and to make art during that period. Any artist who decides to travel, or to leave the residency before the 3 months (or the 6 month period if accepted to that) are finished is financially liable to pay the remaining costs. Please note, upon acceptance into the program, it is up to the artist to secure their space by providing a non-refundable deposit of the first months rent ($1200US). This is the only way to cement the dates you wish to have.

The Artist is responsible for returning the studio/residential space to the condition in which he/she found it at the beginning of the above-stated period. The Artist will do his/her share to help keep communal spaces clean.

All artworks produced during the residency remain entirely the property of the artist unless left here beyond the residency dates. Raid Projects cannot store the work. In the event that the Artist fails to completely remove the work from Raid Projects at the end of the residency, the work and all components will become the property of Raid Projects, and we will have the right to dispose of the work in a manner which we will determine.

Raid Projects will pay all electric, and heating/cooling for the studio space. Internet access, in the form of a connection to our Local Area Network, will be provided.

The Artist agrees that neither Raid Projects, nor its organizers or artists will be liable for any damages arising from any personal injury sustained by the Artist or his/her guests or invitees in, on or about the studio space described above. The Artist further agrees that neither Raid Projects, nor its organizers or artists shall be liable for any damage to or loss or theft of personal property or artwork of the Artist from the property of Raid Projects.

The artist in residence is invited to use the studios in whatever way the artist in residence wishes in order to advance his/her work, however, the space must be returned to the same conditions it was when assigned upon arrival. Permanent changes and alterations such as painting surfaces or putting large holes in the walls are not permitted unless agreed to by Raid Projects and must also be returned to original condition by the artist at their own expense.

Overnight guests are allowed at the artist’s discretion but any stays extending beyond one weekend must be agreed upon with the Director.

Pets are not permitted at any time.

Raid Projects reserves the right to terminate a residency if there is an indication that an artist-in-residence’s behavior during a residency at Raid Projects will or does jeopardize the quality of the experience for other artists in residence, collaborations with affiliate organizations and community relations.

Insurance: Raid Projects does not carry health insurance, personal injury or theft insurance for its artists in residence and should the artist in residence desire this coverage he/she will need to obtain it personally.

Equal opportunity: It is the policy of OAC that there shall be no discrimination with respect to selection of the artist in residence because of race, color, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, gender, age, physical limitations or military status.

What you can expect from the Artist In Residency Program:

To provide the artist with an environment that is condusive to a creative working experience.

To respond in a timely manner to an artists questions and concerns

To provide the artist upon their arrival with rooms that are clean and orderly.

To always be respectful of the artists space.

1. Gallery Hopping:
Shortly after their arrival the artist will be encouraged to visit the many galleries, opening receptions and arts events happening every week. This is a great way to meet people in the LA art scene.

2. Getting Started:
Raid does not provide artists with materials for their projects. However, there are tools at Raid and the artist is more than welcome to use them, but types and availabilities will vary from time to time. And on the subject of tools, Home Depot is just down the street.

3. Analysis:
Upon the artist's request, to engage in a comprehensive critique with the gallery director before the artist completes their residency.
