EXPLOITS IN THE WIRELESS CITY : Radiator / Trampoline, Nottingham, UK

EXPLOITS IN THE WIRELESS CITY : Radiator / Trampoline, Nottingham, UK
Deadline 25th Nov 2008

Since the abundant proliferation of digital communication technology, our (living) space has been expanded, transformed, reshaped. In our everyday lives we increasingly connect to mediated interfaces, be it consciously or without knowing.

Digital media is increasingly integrated seamlessly into all areas of everyday life and work. The so-called ‘virtual worlds’ created in this way are merging ever more dynamically with our physical environment generating new hybrid spaces, becoming a fixed part of our reality themselves.

Our cities are increasingly pervaded by data networks, watched over by cameras, skinned by media facades, populated by users of mobile communication devices carried around with every step. ‘City’ itself has become a media space, a complex fabric, in which an immaterial layer of data is augmenting the urban landscape, both merging ever more seamlessly.

Radiator continues its investigation into the way that artists engage with locality and site, real and virtual urban space. The ‘ Wireless City ’ brings deep cultural changes and our traditional spatial coordinates are gradually being superseded by an enhanced network.

Sharing their inferences and conclusions, artists are invited to reflect upon the challenges facing our freedom, the poetry of resistance and also the opportunities the ‘ Expanded City ’ has to offer.
Radiator welcomes all forms of artistic expression aligned with the theme.

Unintended Uses, NEXUS/foundation, Philadelphia, PA

Unintended Uses, NEXUS/foundation, Philadelphia, PA
Deadline: December 1, 2008 by 11:59 PM

NEXUS/foundation for today's art in Philadelphia, in conjunction with The Hacktory, is seeking  submissions for "Unintended Uses," an exhibition of hacked and repurposed materials scheduled for February 12 through March 6, 2009. Artists and makers working with electronics,  video, robotics, and other new media, and particularly those who reside on the East Coast,  are encouraged to submit work for review.

"Whatever code we hack, be it programming language, poetic language, math or music, curves or colourings, we create the possibility of new things entering the world. Not always great things, or even good things, but new things. In art, in science, in philosophy and culture, in any production of knowledge where data can be gathered, where information can be extracted from it, and where in that information new possibilities for the world are produced, there are hackers hacking the new out of the old. While hackers create these new worlds, we do not possess them. That which we create is mortgaged to others, and to the interests of others, to states and corporations who control the means for making worlds we alone discover. We do not own what we produce - it owns us."

The 'Rencontres Internationales' offers more than a simple presentation of the works. They introduce an intercultural forum gathering various guests from all over the world - artists and filmmakers, institutions and emerging organizations - to testify of their reflections and of their experiences, but also of artistic and cultural contexts that are often experiencing deep changes.

The 'Rencontres Internationales' reflects specificities and convergences of art practices between new cinema and contemporary art, explores emerging media art practices and their critical purposes, and work out this necessary time when points of view meet and are exchanged.

The event aims at presenting those works to a broad audience, at creating circulations between different art practices and between different audiences, as well as creating new exchanges between artists, filmmakers and professionals. It wishes to contribute to a reflection on our contemporary culture of image via a demanding program opened to everyone.

Paris/Berlin/Madrid
In 2007, the 'Rencontres Internationales', which initially took place in Paris and Berlin, opened up to a third city: Madrid. This event now constitutes a unique artistic and cultural platform in Europe for artists, professional networks and different audiences.
