Commission: The Art of Faith, Norfolk, UK
Call for Film & Video Artists
Deadline: 4th November 2009
We are seeking to commission an artist to make a film representing religious faiths in Norfolk today. It will form part of an exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery: The Art of Faith. This exhibition is produced by Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery in partnership with the School of World Art Studies and Museology at the University of East Anglia. It is part of an AHRC funded research project.
The exhibition, which runs from 25th September 2010 – 16th January 2011, is about the history of religious beliefs in Norfolk from prehistory to the present day. Presented chronologically in six sections, it will cover a wide variety of themes, including the relationships between religion and conflict, creativity, ritual, locality and death, explored through objects of art and material culture. Exhibits will include paintings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts and other sacred texts, silver, textiles and objects of social history.
The Work
The film will be shown on a flatscreen in the exhibition and play a vital role in representing the growing variety of faiths practised in contemporary Norfolk. These include Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Paganism and Sikhism, all of which should be afforded equal respect and validity.
We seek a work which creatively explores interactions between people, faith and place. The film has no need to be narrative, documentary or historical in approach, but could be abstract or symbolic.
The Artist
Adherence to a religious faith is not necessary but it will be important for the chosen artist to approach the various faiths with empathy, sensitivity and an open and enquiring mind. S/he will need to spend sufficient time in Norfolk to make visits to the communities involved.
Budget
There is an artist fee of £1000 and up to £8000 to cover travel and production costs.
Application
Please email fi.hitchcock@norfolk.gov.uk to receive further information and an application form; applicants will need to submit a proposal for the work they wish to produce as well as a brief statement of their work and relevant visual material. An interview will precede selection.
The deadline for receipt of completed applications: 4th November 2009.
Panel
The selection committee is made up of representatives from the Norwich Castle Museum, University of East Anglia and the advisory Inter-Faith group.
