"On May 23, 2007 the world celebrated the beginning of the urban millennium. It was on this date that, worldwide, for the first time in history more people lived in cities than in the countryside: 3.3 billion people, on 3 percent of the earth's surface. This development has far-reaching implications. Is a decent, humane life possible in a modern megalopolis that is bursting at its seams? And how can the countryside survive the economic, demographic, cultural and ecological clear-fell that urbanisation brings with it?"

The main exhibition of the Noorderlicht Photofestival 2011, METROPOLIS, City Life in the Urban Age, deals with the role of the city as the nerve centre of modern global society.
It is the second part of a diptych, a follow-up to the 2010 theme LAND, Country Life in the Urban Age, which looked at the shrinking role of the countryside worldwide.
The city, as a phenomenon, has an almost schizophrenic character; its many personalities are constantly encountering one another. It is our intention that these multiple personalities will emerge in the structure of the exhibition, running the gamut from utopia to dystopia.

We are looking for photo series that present a distinctive, even idiosyncratic vision on the character of the modern city. Economic, social or urban planning aspects can each play a role; the series may be literal or metaphorical. We are striving for a global picture; the group exhibition as a whole will be a journey through cities in all parts of the world.
The precise sub-themes will be set out in a following stage of the project. We list several possibilities as examples:

Symphony: The city as the effervescent economic and social nerve centre of modern society, a place for progress, interaction and infinite possibilities;
Mutability: Space that is the product of urban planning, with architectonic dreams of the good life for all the city's inhabitants; from old ideals of equality to modern technology and sustainability;
Expansion: The urge for unbridled expansion in the name of progress, creating new chances but also pushing the old into oblivion; a place of migration, on the way to a better future, even if that means a life in the chaos of the slums;
Seduction: Where massive economic differences exist and everyone is seduced by a mass media landscape to seek greater wealth, where millionaires live next to the homeless;
Fear: Places where the individual can be swamped in a mass of strangers; where the demands of the rat race for success stand in the way of authentic living; where criminality lurks, security demands control and Big Brother is always watching;
Home: Small societies, seeking a place of one’s own in the large, anonymous world around one, or the excessive separation from that wider world; the creation of suburbs where affluent urban life can again appear rural; the shift of the social environment from the real to the virtual world.

Context Matters: Artist Residencies - Call for applications

Citizen Power Peterborough was set up in 2010 to explore the link between place and identity and develop new ways for people to influence and participate in civic life. It is a new breed of innovative cross-organisational partnership and is jointly funded by Peterborough City Council, Arts Council England East (ACEE) and the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (RSA).
Six strands of projects comprise Citizen Power Peterborough, providing opportunities for citizens to build attachment to their surroundings forming the basis for a more sustainable future.
The Arts and Social Change strand is exploring the role of arts and imagination in building a renewed sense of belonging in Peterborough, leading to stronger levels of civic activism in the future. Creative and arts based approaches underpin engagement for the entire programme of Citizen Power through a wide range of programmes that place artists at the centre of re-imagining social change within communities.

Artists’ Residencies: Context Matters
Two artists’ residencies, entitled Context Matters, are being planned to run for one year from spring 2011 (anticipated from May). The two residencies will run concurrently and it is planned that both will work closely with self-organised community and voluntary groups in order to make creative responses to the groups and their work. One residency is aimed at an artist – working in any art form – with substantial experience of working within socially engaged and participatory settings, the second is aimed at an artist – again working in any media – with less experience but with a strong commitment to socially engaged and participatory practice. This second artist will receive ongoing mentoring from the first.

The artists’ residencies, alongside two commissions, will form the most visible mechanism for bringing innovative arts practice into Arts and Social Change. To ensure this work does not sit outside all other strands, it is envisaged that the residencies will feed into the wider Citizen Power programme at appropriate junctures, be intrinsically linked to the core themes of the programme, and engage directly with the citizens of Peterborough as well as the local arts community.

Wysing Arts Centre has been invited to take creative leadership and provide ongoing support for the artists’ residencies as part of the Arts and Social Change strand of Citizen Power Peterborough.
Wysing will guide and support the community groups through the process of hosting a residency and liaise with and support residency artists throughout the year-long process.

Wysing Arts Centre operates an ongoing pioneering residency programme from its site in the village of Bourn, Cambridgeshire, and artists come to Wysing to test out new ways of thinking and push the boundaries of what is possible. What results is often ground-breaking work made by some of the most interesting emergent international artists, frequently in collaboration with specific communities from the surrounding area. In the last five years this approach has led to the creation of extraordinary projects and experiences, and has made Wysing one of Europe’s leading centres for the visual arts.
Following a community consultation process, four groups have come forward and offered to host an artists’ residency. All groups are clear about their responsibilities in hosting the residencies and have been fully briefed on the role of the artist. All the groups have been invited to provide information on their history, what they would like to get out of hosting an artist and what infrastructure and facilities they may have.

To apply, artists are invited to make a proposal in response to one, more, or all of the groups indicating:
1. What interests them about the group/s
2. What their methodology would be in relation to working with the group/s
3. A timeline with key milestones
Artists are also asked to provide examples of relevant previous work including documentation, a statement on their practice and a current CV.

Artists’ Proposals
All artists’ proposals received will be taken back to the groups who will then be supported in selecting an artist to work with their group. Two artists will be selected with residencies commencing in May 2011.
In making the final selection, the groups will be looking for artists who can:
1. Support the existing work of the groups and identify new opportunities for them.
2. Generate thoughtful and relevant artistic activity.
3. Make a creative response to the context of the groups by creating art.

Fees
There are two artist fees reflecting two slightly differing roles.
One artist will be able to demonstrate substantial experience of working in socially engaged, participatory, or relational practice and provide ongoing mentoring to the second artist. This fee is offered at £12,000 (VAT inclusive) and includes travel and subsistence costs. Accommodation costs will be covered from a separate budget.
One artist will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of, and/or strong interest in, socially engaged, participatory, or relational practice but will have less experience. This fee is offered at £8,000 (VAT inclusive) and includes travel and subsistence costs. Accommodation costs will be covered from a separate budget.
There is a total production budget of £7,000 to be shared by both artists. In your proposal, please indicate which role you are applying for.

“Peace and diversity” Video Art Exhibition, Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek

Award: participation of artist’s project on first International Video Art Exhibition in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, in June 2011.
“Peace and diversity” Video Art Exhibition, is the first International video art exhibition presented in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek. Video Art Exhibition invites all video artists and video creators to participate in this year’s exhibition, which will take place in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek in June 2011.
 

Theme
We defined theme of the exhibition as “Pease and diversity” as a reflection on the events happen in today’s world. Political, economic life influences on the changes in social behavior and the ways it influences are different as the results of it. As an act or reflection on the metamorphoses happen today we want to show how artist from different countries around the world perceive those events and world changes.

Eligibility
We are open to every creator (individuals, groups or organizations) of any nationality, sex, age and background.

Application
The proposed video can be of any genre (video art, experimental video, animation, photo presentation, short movie etc.). Duration under 35 minutes.
Applicants can apply their previous video-art works or create new original video composition.

There is no entry fee. Deadline: April 20, 2011.

Video works should be sending by post or be downloaded to the any free upload/download service or via your personal website putting passwords and sending link and password to us by e-mail.

Body/Landscape England 2011

Body Weather - Body/Landscape

Intensive 7-day workshop in the Lake District in North West England. This is an area of great natural and poetic beauty that was designated a National Park in 1951. The Lakes were shaped by periods of glaciation giving the area its diverse landscape of high rocky fells, lower open moorlands and diverse woodland.

The workshop will be based in the small village of Bassenthwaite, adjacent to Bassenthwaite Lake. 

Body Weather - Body/Landscape : The basic training and point of departure for this workshop, Body Weather is a comprehensive training and performance practice that investigates the intersections of bodies and their environments. Bodies are not conceived as fixed entities, but just like the weather, constantly changing through an infinite and complex system of processes occurring in- and outside of these bodies. Taking Body Weather into the landscape, the aim is to explore and develop consciousness of the body itself being an ever evolving landscape within a greater surrounding landscape. 
Programme will include *MB -(mind/body, muscles/bones) dance training *practice of and reflection on physical and mental training *walking and wandering, silent walk, pilgrimage and nocturnal journeys *various modes of experiencing body, movement and landscape *investigating divergent senses of space and time *peripatetic records, drawing, writing, immediate contact with surroundings *mental topography of a location, myth, archaic mind and genius loci *Local geology, archaeology and history  An integral part of the workshop will be the individual artistic projects that participants are encouraged to formulate and work on for about 2 hours a day. (in the fields architecture, landscape art, dance, performance, photography, sculpture, theatre, visual arts, biology and natural history). The workshop leaders are available to guide and support these processes. 
Participants profile: for artists and advanced students working in the fields of performance, dance, landscape art, sculpture, photography, architecture, theatre, visual arts, biology and natural history. 
Selection of participants will be based on c.v. and motivation. No previous (dance) training is necessary but the workshop will be physically demanding, therefore a good overall condition is required.

Frank van de Ven is a dancer and choreographer who spend his formative years in Japan working with Min Tanaka and the Maijuku Performance Company.

In 1993 he founded together with Katerina Bakatsaki 'Body Weather Amsterdam', a platform for training and performance. Since 1995 he conducts with Milos Sejn the interdisciplinary Bohemiae Rosa Project, connecting body and landscape with art, geology and architecture. The 2nd Ghetto Biennale 2011, Port au Prince, Haiti

The 2nd Ghetto Biennale 2011: A Salon des Refusés for the 21st century

The Grand Rue Sculptors are a community of artists living in a down town popular neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. They will host the 2nd Ghetto Biennale which will take place from the end of November until the middle of December 2011. All works must be made and exhibited in Haiti. Artists will be invited to pass one to three weeks in Haiti before presenting their work in the neighbourhood to an audience of local people.

The deadline for proposal applications is midnight Monday 25th April and our decisions will be made and announced by mid-June.  

Applicants for the 2nd Ghetto Biennale 2011 must provide a written synopsis of their project proposal covering methodology, conceptual background and the production and exhibition strategy for the proposed new work on two sides of A4, including illustrations, and a one page CV, all  formatted as pdfs. We will not accept any proposal longer than two sides and neither will we accept website links as a proposal component. Please keep in mind that we are looking for works that will be created and produced during the three week period in Port au Prince, Haiti. We are not looking for work that is already finished.  

There is no funding for this event and you will be expected to cover the cost of your flight, accommodation and materials. We will be more than happy to help (via email) with any research and information. Advice can be given about the practicalities for the production of specific projects and budgeting for the trip.

LOW LIVES 3

INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS

About Low Lives:
Now entering its third year, Low Lives is an international exhibition of live performance-based works transmitted via the internet and projected in real time at multiple venues throughout the U.S. and around the world. Low Lives examines works that critically investigate, challenge, and extend the potential of performance practice presented live through online broadcasting networks. These networks provide a new alternative and efficient medium for presenting, viewing, and archiving performances. Low Lives is not simply about the presentation of performative gestures at a particular place and time but also about the transmission of these moments and what gets lost, conveyed, blurred, and reconfigured when utilizing this medium. Low Lives embraces works with a lo-fi aesthetic such as low pixel image and sound quality, contributing to a raw, DIY and sometimes voyeuristic quality in the transmission and reception of the work.

Low Lives is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Chez Bushwick, an artist-run organization based in Brooklyn, New York dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary art and performance, with a strong focus on new choreography. Chez Bushwick is co-producing Low Lives 3 and is instrumental in extending the platform’s international reach. Low Lives 3 will feature a ‘spotlight’ on Contemporary Choreography throughout the exhibition program.

Artists working in any media are invited to submit proposals for live performance-based works.

Selection Process:
Each Presenting Partner (see list below) will follow their curatorial process to select one performance to take place at their venue. In addition, 30 artists will be selected from artist proposals responding to this Call for Artists, and will be invited to present their work across the Low Lives network. These performances will be transmitted through the internet from a location of the artists’ choice. The Selections Committee will be comprised of Directors and Curators from each of the Presenting Partner institutions. A full-color catalog and companion DVD with information and an image for each participating artist will be produced for Low Lives 3 after the exhibition takes place.

Artists selected to participate in this exhibition will be instructed on how to transmit their performance through a live online broadcasting network. Performances will be projected in real time across the Low Lives 3 network of Presenting Partners and venues. The exhibit will also be available for online viewing, both in real time as it unfolds across political boundaries and time zones, and on the Low Lives website after the event.

Jorge Rojas is a multidisciplinary artist and independent curator. He studied Art at the University of Utah and at Bellas Artes- El Nigromante in San Miguel de Allende, MÈxico. Rojas employs both traditional and new media, as well as performative elements to†investigate communication systems and the effect of technology on artistic production, social structures and communities. His work and curatorial projects have been exhibited in galleries and museums across MÈxico, the United States, India and Brazil. Since 2009, he produces and curates Low Lives, an international, multi-venue exhibition of live, networked performances. Born in Morelos, MÈxico.

Co-Producer
Chez Bushwick, an artist-run organization based in Brooklyn, is dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary art and performance, with a strong focus on new choreography. Since its inception in 2002, the organization has been acknowledged as a new model for economic sustainability in the performing arts, offering New York City's only $5 subsidy for rehearsal space, and thereby fostering the creation, development, and performance of new work. Submissions:   All mediums will be considered including video and performance. All artwork must have been completed within the past three years.  Artists are responsible for delivery and removal of artwork. Send 6-10 images no larger than 2 MB (largest dimension should be no greater than 800 pixels) on a CD. Video art should be submitted on a DVD with a total duration not to exceed 45 minutes. *Include an image list and resume. If work has been previously exhibited in the Greater Philadelphia Area, please list venue, exhibition title and date.

The EMDASH Award 2011 - Frieze Foundation, UK

The EMDASH Award 2011

The EMDASH Award is a major opportunity for an emerging artist working outside the UK to realise a new work at Frieze Art Fair as part of the critically acclaimed Frieze Projects programme.

Supported by the EMDASH Foundation, the award replaces the Cartier Award.
Entrance to the award is by open submission and the winner will be selected by an international panel of artists and curators. The winner will receive a commission to make a new work to be shown at Frieze Art Fair 2011, an artist’s fee, a production budget of £10,000 and a three- month residency at Gasworks in London.

Proposals for work can take the form of site-specific installations; performance; film; video or print work. Applicants will be judged on the innovative nature of their proposal and its suitability for realisation at Frieze Art Fair. The EMDASH Award is open to non-UK-based artists within five years of graduating from an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, or under 35 years of age.
