Last year more than 6,000 Visitors attended an exciting art exhibition of more than 3,000 artworks by nearly 1,200 artists from 17 countries, 36 states! More than 1,400 artworks sold. It was a huge success!

We asked every visitor to 6x6x2009 if we should have another 6x6 exhibition.
Resoundingly, you answered YES! 

Submissions Due: May 2, 2010 at 5pm.

Artworks may be mailed or delivered directly to RoCo,137 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14604. Wed. - Sun. 1-5 pm, January 24 - May 2.

Each submission must be accompanied by the submission form, available on the RoCo website. Artworks must be signed only on the back (to be exhibited and sold anonymously) and accompanied by the submission form.

6x6x2010 is the third exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths and YOU. Each artwork will be 6x6 inches square and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously. All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each, to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Artists' names will be revealed to the buyer only upon purchase and all artworks will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition. Don't miss Rochester's largest exhibition and don't miss the chance to show your artwork in great company and support of Rochester's downtown contemporary art venue. All submissions are due by May 2 at 5 pm and should be delivered or mailed directly to Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Newly refurbished Ashby Mews studios brought to you by Artistic Spaces Ltd available now in Brockley. Unit 3 Ashby mews Iidael for all sorts of artistic practice and small business.  The secure 24hr access studio spaces available range from around 200sq ft to 400sq ft with natural light, high ceilings, fantastic wall space and large access throughout with CCTV security. There are several spaces under £195 a month. All prices include rates, service charge and there will be a free broadband wireless connection for all tenants. These studios are situated in Brockley, a 5 minute walk from the station and not much further from New Cross and Goldsmiths. The studios benefit from being in the Brockley open studios catchment area. The open studios have been running since 1992 and have become a hugely successful annual event for artists to display, discuss and sell their work.

Proposals are invited to use the gallery spaces for up to 2 weeks for experimental, in-progress, interactive, explorative or durational work. Proposals can be artist or curator-led.

The opportunity to be a part of Platform could be used as a test-bed for new ideas or processes but the work must be available for public interface either through timed events or by an on-going schedule throughout the period. All events will be promoted through Site networks to wide audiences. Platform 2010 will take place at Site Gallery from November 2010 – January 2011.

The Criteria
"First and foremost the Allianz Kulturstiftung addresses exceptionally gifted young people from all sectors of art, culture and education, from whom the Foundation expects that they will take an active part in shaping the 21st century. In the broadest sense this means Europe is the scope of action. Primarily multinational and intercultural cooperation projects will be supported which effectively promote the European integration process and which have a lasting influence. Urgency and European dynamism are essential criteria for selecting the projects as well as an outstanding artistic, scientific or pedagogic quality or a special relevance with regard to conveying European cultural history..."

The sponsorship criteria of the Allianz Kulturstiftung have been set sufficiently broadly to avoid restricting the definition of culture or to avoid excluding any particular sector. The main sponsoring is on contemporary cross-genre or cross-media concepts and initiatives. At the same time the Allianz Kulturstiftung puts special emphasis upon promoting projects which are innovative in their content or method and which deliberately perceive the new trends in art, culture and education from the moment they emerge. Thus the projects often have a workshop character - the active generation of knowledge and the exchange of experience gained is of equal importance as the final result. In addition, the projects for sponsorship should be suited to achieving long-term effectiveness and should invite follow-on projects.

Schloss Ringenberg Curatorial Grant / Kuratorenstipendium, Germany

Curatorial Grants – Practice and Networking, 2010/11

In July 2010, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Fonds BVKB (NL) will inaugurate a new model for promoting postgraduate curatorial work by offering a programme-based grant for three curators. The grant provides !1,250/month in support for each participant for a period of 12 months. The curatorial grant is practice-oriented and tied in with the German- Dutch European project smax. The programme is located at Schloss Ringenberg, in Hamminkeln on the Lower Rhine.

Schloss Ringenberg has been in operation as a studio and exhibition centre for 30 years. With eight German and Dutch artist fellows per year, dialogue-focused exhibitions and cross-border knowledge exchange, along with a wealth of activities for the public, the Schloss unites under one roof in an exemplary fashion the whole spectrum of contemporary cultural endeavour.

Since 2001 the work of Schloss Ringenberg has centred on European projects involving German-Dutch cooperation. In conjunction with changing project partners on both sides of the border – including the Akademieverbund ArtEZ in Arnhem, the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach and Kurhaus Kleve – the Schloss has since 2005 been providing cultural producers and mediators with the means to try out unusual contemporary art concepts and formats.

The new European project smax (2009-2012) is now carrying these promotional efforts forward with a practice-oriented model consisting of new residential grants. For the invited curators in the cross-border region smax offers a versatile selection of concrete fields of work as opportunity to independently put their ideas into practice. In a special match situation, the participants are integrated into a cultural network that provides them with a model for the real conditions under which they will embark on their careers.

Curatorial fellows (2 from NRW / 1 from Fonds BKVB) will be chosen by a Dutch-German expert jury. Required for the two candidates from NRW is a completed course of studies in art history or art studies at a university in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as demonstrated professional qualifications. The three fellows will live and work for the most part at the Schloss together during the 12-month grant period. Residence at the Schloss and participation in smax are mandatory for grant-holders

Noorderlicht invites photographers and curators to submit proposals for the 2010 Photofestival. This year Noorderlicht is focusing on changes in the contemporary countryside.

Today only a minority of the world's population still lives in rural areas. The demands of the modern global economy have created a major divide between rural areas and city life in terms of standards of living. While conditions tend to deteriorate at the countryside, life in urban areas seems to increase rapidly. This change has been a gradual process in the Western world, and an explosive one in the non-Western world. The divide will only get bigger in the years to come.

How is rural life changing due to the growing pressure of the current urbanised and global economy? Noorderlicht calls on photographers and curators around the world who are working on this topic to submit their photo stories.

In a follow-up to this theme, in 2012 Noorderlicht will shift its attention away from rural life to city life to further investigate the effects of global urbanization. Early submissions on this topic are also welcome.

Stour Valley Arts and ArtSway are seeking to commission a UK based artist, working in any media, to produce a new body of work resulting from research undertaken in the locations of both commissioning partners. The artist will be given time and financial resources to explore and research the areas in question to produce at least one exhibition (scheduled at ArtSway in April 2011), with critical and practical support from ArtSway and Stour Valley Arts.

Stour Valley Arts – ArtSway Residency/ Co-commission
Stour Valley Arts at King’s Wood, Challock in Kent, and ArtSway in the New Forest, Hampshire, are collaborating on an exciting new residency/ co-commission. The aim of this partnership is to provide the opportunity for a talented emerging or mid-career UK based artist, working in any media, to research, develop and present new work in the UK with professional support from two established visual arts organisations. 

 

Commission Details:
 
Project Brief : - Stour Valley Arts and ArtSway are seeking to commission a UK based artist, working in any media, to produce a new body of work resulting from research undertaken in the locations of both commissioning partners (please see ‘about’ section at the end of this document for information on Stour Valley Arts and ArtSway). The artist will be given time and financial resources to explore and research the areas in question to produce at least one exhibition (scheduled at ArtSway in April 2011), with critical and practical support from ArtSway and Stour Valley Arts.
 
PLEASE NOTE: It is anticipated that the selected artist will spend time in residence with Stour Valley Arts and also ArtSway (this residency period is open to negotiation but the commission period is expected to be from May 2010 to April 2011). For the Stour Valley Arts element of the commission the artist will be expected to make numerous site visits across the duration of the commission period – maximizing contact time with King's Wood throughout the seasons. For the ArtSway element of the commission, the artist has the choice of staying in residence for two consecutive months, or to intersperse their visits to the New Forest with their visits to Stour Valley Arts. Both venues are keen to be as flexible as they are able, and to offer the selected artist as much engagement (funding permitting) with the locations of each of the commission partners as possible.

The research undertaken by the selected artist may focus on, but need not be limited to, the geography, ecology or history of King’s Wood and the area surrounding ArtSway, but all proposals for new work developed during this residency should be a response to these places.

Eligibility: - The commission is aimed at a UK based practitioner of any nationality and of any age, working in any media. If not an EEC resident, you must ensure that you are eligible to work in the UK.
This opportunity is offered on a freelance basis, and the selected artist is responsible for their own tax arrangements.

Finances: -  The fee for the commission is £4200, with additional financial resources in the range of approximately £14,000 available for travel and accommodation expenses, production costs for
new work, exhibition costs, marketing and potentially a small publication. 

Exhibition Details: - An exhibition of the work produced during the residency (and existing work if appropriate) will be scheduled for 6 – 8 weeks during April and May 2011 at ArtSway. Where appropriate, new work may also be realised within King’s Wood or be presented at another venue co-ordinated by SVA in late 2011 (details tbc). The work produced may also be exhibited as part of ArtSway’s New Forest Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011, subject to funding.
 

- ArtSway will support the presentation of the work with professional marketing and press in partnership with Stour Valley Arts. 
 
Selection Process: It is anticipated that the research for the commission will begin in Summer 2010. The deadline for applications is Friday 23 April 2010. Six artists will be short-listed, and interviews to select one artist will take place on Tuesday 11 May 2010 at ArtSway, Station Road, Sway, Hampshire, SO41 6BA. If you are selected for interview, but unable to attend, telephone interviews may be arranged. Artists will be notified of a decision no later than Monday 17 May 2010.

The selection panel will include: Sandra Drew, Director, Stour Valley Arts; Dan Howard-Birt, Assistant Curator, Stour Valley Arts; Mark Segal, Director, ArtSway; Peter Bonnell, Curator, ArtSway.
 
Artists are asked to submit:
 
1. Proposal of work or research for the commission; Maximum one side of A4, approximately 500 words. 2. Up to twenty images of recent work on CD Rom (standard packages only e.g powerpoint, .jpeg or .pdf files) and/or DVD/ VHS (DVD preferred);
3. A brief statement on your work (and/or critical text on work recently published);
4. A current CV.

SVA is an independent arts organisation based, since 1994, in King’s Wood, Challock, Kent.  King’s Wood is a 1500-acre forest owned and managed by the Forestry Commission in an area of outstanding natural beauty.  Artists from the UK and overseas are invited to undertake research residencies, often across long periods of time, responding to the landscape, ecology or history of King’s Wood.  During these residencies, proposals are supported and developed culminating in the delivery of new works.  These works are made in a variety of media and are either realised within the forest or exhibited in galleries and other off-site locations.

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios launches New Artist’s Award with City of Frankfurt for 2010

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (TBG&S) is delighted to announce a new partnership for international arts exchange in 2010 with The Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt.  The partnership is a new Award open to emerging and ‘emerged’ visual artists in Ireland and provides a funded opportunity for one artist to participate on Frankfurt City’s Artist-in-Residence Programme.  From 1st October – 31st December 2010, Frankfurt’s Artist-in-Residence Programme will host one artist from Ireland in the newly constructed ‘Kulturbunker’ studios.  ‘Reciprocally, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios will host a German-based artist in Dublin from October-December 2010.  Artists currently living and working in Ireland are invited to apply to TBG&S for the pilot ‘TBG&S and Frankfurt City Artist-in-residence Award’ by 12pm on Tuesday 4th May 2010.   

The exchange with The Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt is the second annual exchange project of this kind initiated by Temple Bar Gallery and Studios.  Now in its fourth year, the exchange between TBG&S and HIAP-Helsinki Artist-in-residence Programme provides similar support for artists from Ireland to live and work at HIAP Studios in Helsinki.   A central purpose of these exchanges is to stimulate international networks, collaboration and dialogue between artists, arts professionals and cultural institutions.  The TBG&S and Frankfurt City Artist-in-residence Award specifically, will provide one artist from Ireland with spacious living and working accommodation, a monthly stipend of €700, a museum card and bicycle for a three month stay in the city.  In addition, artists participating on Frankfurt’s Artist-in-Residence Programme will have work selected for the ‘Artist in Residence Exhibition’ held annually in November and launched in conjunction with Open Doors, a citywide cultural event. 

The TBG&S and Frankfurt City Artist-in-Residence Award is supported by the Goethe-Institut Irland, The Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt and the private sponsorship of Therry Rudin and Patricia Hurl, artists at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, who have offered a city centre apartment for the three months of the Dublin residency.

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (TBG&S) is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art centres.  Centrally located in Dublin’s cultural quarter, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios is a publicly-funded, not-for-profit arts space set-up by artists in 1983.  A gallery and artists studio complex, it is dedicated to the presentation, promotion and mediation of contemporary art and to the provision of affordable studio space to artists.  The use of the studios reflects the broad-ranging developments in contemporary art practice with artists working in sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video, film, performance, live art, sound, collaborative practice, research-led practice, photography and print all currently occupying studios here. Of the 30 artists’ studios at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, one is reserved for international artists while the others are allocated to Dublin-based artists on a competitive basis. 
 

Artist in Residence Programme – City of Frankfurt am Main

The Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt am Main has conducted an Artist in Residence Programme since the year 1990.  The project is designed to promote the artistic interchange between cities and is based on the principle of reciprocity.  The City provides a residential studio and a monthly grant. The counter programme provides Frankfurt artists with the opportunity to live and work in a partner city for a similar period and under equivalent conditions.  Frankfurt’s Artist in Residence Programme is not to be regarded purely as a material award, but as a possibility for gathering and artistically developing new impressions and experiences.  The exchange should serve to establish new contacts that could be beneficial for creative achievements in the future.  In this way the Programme’s goal is to form an international artistic network between participating artists and venues.
