In recognition of our mutual interest in documentary and fine art photography, Daylight Magazine and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University have started an international competition, the Daylight/CDS Photo Awards, to honor and promote talented and committed photographers, both emerging and established.

Two awards, a PROJECT PRIZE and a WORK-IN-PROCESS PRIZE.

DURHAM, NC—The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and The Honickman Foundation are pleased to announce that internationally renowned color photographer William Eggleston will judge the 2010 CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography competition.

William Eggleston’s groundbreaking reinvention of color photography in the 1970s established him as one of America’s most original and influential artists. His landmark solo show at the Museum of Modern Art, curated by John Szarkowski, and the companion book, William Eggleston’s Guide (1976), brought Eggleston international acclaim and established him as the “father of color photography.” Szarkowski wrote of the photographs, “As pictures . . . these seem to me perfect: irreducible surrogates for the experience they pretend to record, visual analogues for the quality of one life, collectively a paradigm of a private view, a view one would have thought ineffable, described here with clarity, fullness, and elegance.” Eggleston’s other books and portfolios include Los Alamos, Election Eve, Flowers, Wedgwood Blue, Seven, Troubled Waters, The Louisiana Project, William Eggleston’s Graceland, The Democratic Forest, Faulkner’s Mississippi, Ancient and Modern, 5 x 7, Spirit of Dunkerque, 2 º, and William Eggleston: Paris. He has been a lecturer in Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University, a researcher in color video at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a recipient of awards and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Hasselblad Foundation, and PhotoEspaÒa. In 2004, he was awarded the Getty Images Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Center of Photography. Eggleston has also photographed on the sets of such filmmakers as John Huston, David Byrne, and Gus Van Sant, and he is the subject of Michael Almereyda’s documentary film William Eggleston in the Real World (2005). In 2008, the Whitney Museum of American Art, with Haus der Kunst in Munich, organized the retrospective exhibition William Eggleston: Democratic Camera, Photographs and Video, 1961–2008.

“William Eggleston brings to the First Book Prize his singular vision on the ordinary, his democratic view of the everyday,” said Tom Rankin, director of the Center for Documentary Studies. “We could have no one better to locate the next great American photography book than him, no one more acute in seeing the brilliant fibers of the ever-present.”

Lynne Honickman, president of The Honickman Foundation, said, “I'm old enough to remember that first show at MOMA of color photography: It didn't just launch William Eggleston, it was a turning point that launched color photography. And I was overwhelmed. It wasn't a matter of beauty or ugliness to me, it was as if the world awakened and saw itself, for the first time, in living color. Eggleston's work, to me, was as boisterous as a sunset or an ocean . . . as mundane as pieces of our life . . . as mysterious and as deep. It simply was what it was. . . . He broke new ground and it took some time for the photo community to catch up.

Judges for the CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography are among the most significant and innovative artists, curators, and writers in contemporary photography. Renowned photographer and writer Robert Adams was the prize’s inaugural judge in 2002. Maria Morris Hambourg, founding curator of the Department of Photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, judged the second biennial competition (2004). The judge for the third competition (2006) was Robert Frank, one of America’s most important and influential photographers. Celebrated photographer Mary Ellen Mark was the judge of the fourth prize competition (2008).

The biennial Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography competition is open to American photographers of any age who have never published a book-length work and who use their cameras for creative exploration, whether it be of places, people, or communities; of the natural or social world; of beauty at large or the lack of it; of objective or subjective realities. The prize honors work that is visually compelling, that bears witness, and that has integrity of purpose.
The winning photographer receives a grant of $3,000, publication of a book of photography, and inclusion in a website devoted to presenting the work of winners of the prize. The judge also writes the introduction for the book, which is published by Duke University Press in association with CDS Books of the Center for Documentary Studies.

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, 2010, London

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

One of the founding principles of the Royal Academy of Arts was to 'mount an annual exhibition open to all artists of distinguished merit' to finance the training of young artists in the RA Schools. Now known as the Summer Exhibition and held every year without interruption since 1769, the exhibition attracts around 10,000 works, the selection being carried out by Academicians chaired by the President.

The Summer Exhibition is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world, drawing together a wide range of new work by both established and unknown living artists.

An artist may enter a maximum of two works for the consideration of the judges, for a handling charge of £25.00 per work. The co-ordinators have agreed that the theme for 2010 will be Raw, but adherence to this is not a condition of entry and all submissions will be welcome. Please note that the deadline for purchasing an Entry Form online is Tuesday 3 March and we will no longer be sending forms abroad after this date.

Film & Video Umbrella Commissioning Opportunity, London

“Freedom from Want” -  FREE TO AIR , London

This is a call for London-based artists to submit proposals for moving-image projects to form part of FREE TO AIR – a four-year programme of artistic activity delivered by Film and Video Umbrella and funded by London Councils. FREE TO AIR is part of a range of cultural initiatives funded by London Councils intended to address the under-representation within the cultural sector of artists and communities from ethnically diverse backgrounds. We are therefore particularly interested in hearing from artists to whom issues of cultural diversity and race are significant.

Commission Opportunity

This is an opportunity for a practicing artist to produce a major new film, video or digital media work to be commissioned and produced in collaboration with Film and Video Umbrella during 2010. The work will be staged at two London venues during Autumn 2010, alongside a screening programme and other contextual activities. The work will also go on to be exhibited at further UK venues as part of Film and Video Umbrella’s UK-wide programme of touring exhibitions.

The commissioned artist will be offered an artist’s fee.

Curatorial theme

Taking as its starting point the famous ‘four freedoms’ – freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear – identified by Roosevelt in 1941, FREE TO AIR sets out to explore some of the multiple meanings of freedom in contemporary society.

The focus of this year’s project will be ‘Freedom from Want’. Artists interested in applying for the 2010 commission are invited to address this theme broadly and creatively.

Artists might choose to focus on the economic disparity that has long been a feature of life in a city whose visible extremes of wealth and deprivation have become increasingly pronounced since the recent onset of recession.

Or they may choose to look more kindly on the material advantages that the city can offer (when compared to other, more impoverished parts of the world), emphasising the extent to which people’s life-chances can be enhanced dramatically with the benefit of social provision or through access to improved economic opportunities.

Or they may decide to look more critically at the consumer society that contemporary London increasingly embodies; in its endless, ever-more spectacular parade of most-wanted goods and commodities, and in its rampedup, almost rampant creation of unsatisfied, potentially unsatisfiable desires.

Background

FREE TO AIR launched in 2009, and featured a diverse programme of activities, including a new commission, Sleep Walk, Sleep Talk by Suki Chan. Presented in collaboration with A Foundation and 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning, this two-screen video installation formed the centerpiece of a series of screenings and events, running throughout September and October 2009, which celebrated the principle of freedom of speech and the enduring importance of freedom of expression. Guidelines for Submission

Proposals must be for a moving-image work suitable for digital playback.

A production budget of £20K will be available, and this should cover preproduction, production and post-production. Additional budget is available for presentation, touring and marketing. In addition to this, the commissioned artists will be offered a fee of £2,300, subject to contract.

Festival curator David Gilbert is calling for proposals for our commissioned programme for 2010 and beyond.

Thematically Wirksworth Festival will continue to explore the relationship between Art & Architecture, and over the next three years we want to explore the nature, meanings and uses (past, present, actual and potential) of buildings | indoor and outdoor space | public and private space in a number of ways:

1. Pavilion Programme. A call to architects and designers interested in proposing a temporary structure (a Pavilion) for Wirksworth.

2. [Im]Possible Wirksworth: An inventory of unrealised ideas. The Pavilion will contain concept designs, fly-through graphics, maquettes etc, from architects, designers, artists, proposing exciting and radical new buildings, remodelling of existing buildings, uses of unusual and problematic sites, etc...

Some of these projects may be realised as part of the commissioned programme.

3. Site-specific/Site-responsive commissions. This will be complemented by extending the site-specific and site-responsive art commissioning programme, so we are now seeking proposals for interventions in spaces in the town, whether sculptural, architectural, projected (including film, interactive work and 3D motion graphics) or performative.

4. Film and Moving Image. A new strand to the Festival is film/artists' film and video, with an architecture themed short film salon for 2010, and the potential for projection works which interact with, intervene in or respond to architecture.

Competition for the Design of a Freedom and Unity Memorial in Berlin 2010

Freedom and Unity Memorial in Berlin 2010

On 9 November 2007, the German parliament, the Bundestag, decided that the Federal Republic of Germany will erect a Memorial to Freedom and Unity in remembrance of the peaceful revolution in the autumn of 1989 and the reinstatement of Germany's national unity.

The Memorial to Freedom and Unity is to be erected as a national symbol in the centre of the German capital. Its meaning and effect are to be reflected in its form and design.

The chosen location for the future Monument to Freedom and Unity is the plinth of the former national monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I. on the so-called "Schlossfreiheit" in Berlin-Mitte.

The German Bundestag occupied itself with this topic in several resolutions. In the meeting of the Committee for Culture and Media held in July 2009, the objective of the monument was once again defined in precise terms:

• The memory of the peaceful revolution in the autumn of 1989 and the reinstatement of German unity is to be the artistic focus of the Freedom and Unity monument
• The contribution of the citizens of Leipzig, who played an outstanding role in the peaceful revolution, is to be acknowledged - independently of this competition - with their own monument in Leipzig.
• The nearby Deutsches Historisches Museum will enable additional, broad information to be provided. The peaceful revolution and reunification in 1990 will be presented there in the context of the whole history of the freedom and unity movement in Germany. An information site is not planned as part of this competition.

A procedure will be initiated consisting of a restricted interdisciplinary competition with preceding open application procedure. This means, the sponsor publicly invites interested professionals (artists, architects, landscape architects) to apply. Suitability criteria will be defined by the sponsor to acquire particularly qualified applicants. A selection committee of experts will choose approximately 30 participants from the applications received. The competition will be implemented with the chosen participants. These participants will submit their designs, which will then be assessed by a jury.

"Anatomy in the Gallery," a rotating exhibition program at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, showcases medically inspired contemporary art within the unique context of the Museum’s historical collections and exhibits. The program was begun in 1998 to help fulfill the Museum's mission of enriching its visitors' lives by enhancing their knowledge and understanding of surgery and related sciences. "Anatomy in the Gallery" will be accepting proposals for the 2011 exhibition year until April 16, 2010.

Two exhibitions are presented concurrently during every eleven-week exhibition period, one in each of the Museum’s adjacent galleries, for a total of eight exhibition opportunities a year. Please indicate in your submission if you would be unable to show your work during one or more of the exhibition periods.

Proposals are accepted at any time, but the postmark deadline to be considered for 2011 is April 16, 2010. Proposals sent after that date will automatically be considered for the next application period.

The medical theme is open to interpretation, but figure studies without additional medical content do not qualify. Individual artists, groups, and curators are eligible to submit proposals. Work in any medium will be considered; however, the physical limitations of the galleries may factor into the committee’s decisions.

EACH ARTIST MAY SUBMIT 2 ARTIST’S BOOKS PER SUBMISSION FOR THIS EXHIBITION • Generally, no book should be larger than can be displayed on a 12 inch (30cm) high podium style display, or that cannot lay conveniently on a table. Any type or style of artist book including foldouts, accordion style (concertinas), scrolls, or loose pages contained in a box, and in any medium utilizing any sort of ground, or page materials, may be submitted. All sorts of binding are welcome. Books that are purely creative text are welcome. However, books that are meant to be read, as say a novel or where the text alone is the key to the content of the book, and having no extra-creative aspect about them, will be rejected. About the role
Drawing on your intellectual, art historical and curatorial expertise, you'll be fundamental to the intellectual development and creative vision of Tate's future programme. Bringing a fresh approach and the confidence to challenge ideas while stimulating debate, you'll work with the Chief Curator to expand and deepen the role of research and development that underpins the programme.
