GUIDELINES

Hayward Touring in association with a number of regional museums and galleries invites proposals for an innovative exhibition, touring to four UK venues in 2009. This is the inaugural exhibition of a series of three annual Hayward Touring curatorial open calls. Each year one applicant will be given the opportunity to initiate and develop a mid-scale touring exhibition.

For 40 years, The Hayward has a played a key role in creating imaginative, high profile exhibitions in London and throughout the UK. Hayward Touring annually presents around 22 shows to 650,000 people in approximately 86 UK venues.  Exhibitions range in scale from the British Art Show, the largest survey of contemporary British art organised in the UK, to small graphics and photography shows. Forthcoming exhibitions include Disposable People: Contemporary Global Slavery in collaboration with Autograph ABP and Magnum Photos, September 2008, and The Russian Linesman curated by Mark Wallinger, February 2009. Hayward Touring: Curatorial Open is an integral strand within the Hayward Touring programme with the purpose of developing a long-term strategy for working in collaboration with regional museums and galleries. Creating opportunities for professional development through touring, fostering relationships founded on innovative, exciting and challenging exhibitions and Hayward Touring: Curatorial Open aims to increase the possibilities for public engagement with contemporary art. 


Honorarium
Hayward Touring: Curatorial Open provides a honorarium of £3,000 plus £1,000 for research and travel expenses. The curator will be expected to work within a modest exhibition budget that will allow for a small publication.


Selection Panel
Ralph Rugoff (Director, The Hayward), Roger Malbert (Senior Curator, Hayward Touring), representatives of the participating museums and galleries and an artist (to be announced).


Submission and Eligibility
Please read all the instructions carefully – your application will be disqualified if all the criteria and submission requested material are not met.

The application form is to be completed.
Exhibition proposal not to exceed more than two pages (single-sided).
Supporting visual material (in a word document) not to exceed 15 images.
Only one submission per applicant.
Applicants must be UK domicile.
Applicants are unable to apply to tour a solo exhibition of their own work.
Applicants must be at least one year outside of college or equivalent.

Exhibition Proposal
The submission of your proposal should not exceed 2 pages (single-sided) and consider:

A detailed description of the proposed exhibition of contemporary art. Describe the concept of the exhibition, and appropriate participating artists, for a touring exhibition. All forms of visual art, with no media restrictions, are eligible.
A proposal for a touring exhibition for mid-scale sized venues, averaging 130sqm to 250sqm in space, touring to a variety of museums and galleries in different locations across the UK.
The logistical challenges of mounting and touring this exhibition.


Supporting Material
Submit visual support material, maximum 15 images (72 dpi, low resolution), into a word document to be sent by email to accompany your application.


Key Dates
Application deadline: 5pm Monday 8 September 2008
Shortlisting end of September 2008.
Shortlisted applicants (between 5-10 applicants) will be notified by week 3 October 2008.
Interviews and presentations by shortlisted applicants 14 October 2008.
Successful applicant notified by 17 October 2008.
