Announcement of a competition for Artist’s Residence “Diogene urbanbivoauc”

The association of artists Diogene advertises the competition “ Diogene urbanbivoauc” , a programme directed to international artists with the aim of experimenting a brand new method of close examination of the artist’s work and of the his/her role in the society.
This will be possible through periods of stay abroad and international exchanges and it will lead to an increases dialogue among artists focusing the attention on the deep comprehension of job poetics.
A project of artists for artists
The project of Residence Diogene urbanbivouac emerges from the collaboration of a group of artists who feel the need to reflect and to exchange their ideas on the relationship between art and society, on the role of the artist, on the art as a form of knowledge, and who decided to gather and open themselves to a dialogue with other artists, working together to fulfil the projects that arise from the deep contact with the territory.
Art. 1 Requirements:
The competition is open to all the artists born before 1990 and currently working in the specific sector of visual arts, without any trends or techniques restrictions.
Art. 2 Place of Residence:
One of the elements which better characterises the program “Diogene urbanbivouac” is the peculiar site of the residence; the selected artist will in fact be hosted in a small housing form(the Bivouac), built in an “interstitial” area of the city, that will become the place where the artist lives and works, experimenting a new way of strong interaction between the urban environment and its community.
The Bivouac, projected by the research group Diogene and with the possibility of personalize from the artist, has been created using salvaged materials and a survival kit; reducing the needs to what is strictly necessary.
It is an attitude that cannot be considered as an extreme survival experiment but rather as a wish to relate to the city, our “natural” habitat, seeking the essentiality.
The urban bivouac becomes a kind of Diogene’s ” barrel”, a space strictly directed to meditation, with the aim of adding value to the artist’s works contents.
Art. 3 Period of stay and Site
The candidates are invited to present a project which has to be completed in 3 weeks time, between 15 September and 30 October 2008 in the city of Turin.
On the website www.diogenebivaccourbano.it, it will be possible to download all the documents required including: photographs and data illustrating the features of the different sites detected by Diogene as the most suitable to host the urban bivouac; drawings and technical data of the housing form where the artist will live during his period of stay; the application form and the announcement of competition.
The candidate will be able to choose, among the ones selected by the Association, the site of residence that better meets his needs life and work wise, indicating it clearly in the project and in the application form.
It will be the association’s responsibility to mount and equip the bivouac in the site selected by the artist, guaranteeing an adequate level of comfort and functionality.
The association’s artists will give all the technical and logistical support in order to help the host artist to work on his project in the best way.
Art. 4 Events during the stay
During the period of stay the Diogene association will organize different meetings in a public space (for ex the auditorium of Turin Academy of arts) where critics, researchers and experts will be invited to take part and listen to the introduction to the artist’s personal research and to his/her project carried out in Turin. It is also planned a seminar event organized by Diogene’s group in collaboration with a.titolo’s group, a colective of turiners curators will analyse specific aspects concearning the artist poetry.
There will also be an “Open Studio” moment in which the artist will be open and free to talk to the public.
Art. 5 Logistics
The association, with the final decision of the commission, will allocate a maximum of 5600 euros divided in this way :
Attendance fee: 1500 euros
Economic support for the realization of the project that has to be developed during the stay 2000
euros
Money for eating expenses 600 euros
Money for travels expenses up to 1500 euros.

1)Artistic Curriculum with name, surname, address, email, telephone, types of studies, artistic works and maybe a review of the papers (20 pages at the maximum)
2)Photographic reproduction (20 at the maximum) including title ,date , medium, dimension and a brief description of the work (not more than 300strokes for every image).
3) All the documents on paper listed above in point number 2 must be also sent on CD or DVD. Files JPG, dimension: 720 per 576 pixel, resolution: 72 dpi are accepted.
4) Motivations to the participation for the programme of stay “Diogene Bivaccourbano”, not more than 1500 strokes.
5) Work project that the candidate intends to carry out during his/her stay, highlighting the site chosen for the bivouac (among the ones indicated in the documents given) and some possible further pieces of information about the institutions and the interlocutors who will be involved into the project.
6) Photocopy of the ID
7) Signed declaration for using personal data in order to create a specific memory bank for the Diogene association.
8) The filled application form. The incomplete applications or the ones belonging to candidates lacking the required qualifications will be considered not valid. The documents won’t be given back while they will be inserted into the Diogene Association’s Archive.
The Jury
The project will be evaluated from a jury composed by the artists of the Association’s management Committee. The names of the winners will be made known by the 31 of July 2008 through publication of the results on the Internet web site www.diogenebivaccourbano.it and by contacting the winners directly.
Adhering to the project means accepting completely and unconditionally the present
announcement.
